Online shopping is convenient — but nobody wants to hand over card details on a checkout that feels dodgy. The good news is you don’t need to be “techy” to spot a safer payment page.

Before you enter your details, do these five quick checks. It takes about 20 seconds and can save you a lot of hassle.

    1) Check the web address (URL)

A safe checkout should use https:// (not http), and the domain should match the business name exactly.

    What to look for:

    • “https://” at the start
    • A web address that matches the brand (no extra words, no odd spelling)

🚩 Red flag: Misspellings, random extra characters, or a totally different domain.

    2) Look for a trusted payment method

Legit checkouts often use well-known providers (for example, an Australian bank, PayPal or Stripe), or recognised ecommerce platforms. This matters because reputable providers have built-in security and verification steps.

    What to look for:

    • Familiar payment options
    • A clear, standard-looking checkout experience

🚩 Red flag: A checkout that only offers unusual payment methods or seems inconsistent with the brand.

    3) Confirm you’re on the real site

Scam sites often copy branding and photos, then trick you with small differences in links or web addresses.

    Quick check:

    • If you clicked from an ad, open a new tab and search the business name to find their official website
    • Compare the domain and details

🚩 Red flag: “Too good to be true” discounts paired with a strange website address.

    4) Find reassurance information

A trustworthy business makes it easy to answer basic questions before you pay.

    What to look for:

    • Delivery/shipping info
    • Returns/refunds policy
    • Support contact details (email, phone, address)
    • Clear business name and ABN details where relevant

🚩 Red flag: No policies, no contact info, or only a generic form.

    5) Don’t ignore warning signs

Your gut is a useful tool. If a checkout page feels rushed or messy, pause.

    Watch for:

    • Pop-ups pushing urgency (“pay now or miss out”)
    • Odd redirects during checkout
    • Broken pages, strange spelling, or inconsistent branding

If in doubt: Stop, double check the domain, and consider using a payment method with extra protection (like PayPal). You can also do a quick Google search of the business name and ‘reviews’ to help provide insight from the experience of other shoppers.

Your current website may be costing you customers

If your checkout doesn’t feel safe and clear, people abandon it — even when they want to buy.
