About the project

For Sushi@School, the website isn't a marketing tool. It's the engine the whole business runs on. Every school lunch and fundraising order flows through it, so when the platform started to struggle, the business did too.

The Problem

After tens of thousands of orders, the original platform had become bloated and slow, and persistent bugs had crept in. What should have been a smooth ordering system had turned into a daily source of stress.

That friction showed up on both sides. Schools placing orders met a clunky, confusing experience, and behind the scenes the team faced constant management headaches just keeping operations running.

For a business this dependent on its platform, that wasn’t sustainable. The site didn’t need more features piled on top. It needed to be stripped back, simplified and rebuilt around a cleaner experience that could handle the volume without breaking.

The new Sushi@School website takes a platform that thousands of orders had left bloated and buggy and rebuilds it around simplicity. The result is a faster, more reliable site that's easier for schools to order through and far less stressful for the team to run.

The rebuild focused on cutting back the bloat and putting strong UX design at the centre. The ordering process was simplified so schools can place and manage orders without confusion, and the platform underneath was made stable enough to handle high order volumes without the bugs that had been causing problems.

It also introduced practical new features the business had been missing. Customers can now change or cancel their own order right up to a set cut-off time, removing a whole category of phone calls and manual admin from the team’s plate and giving schools more control.

The result is a platform that finally matches the business running on it: simple for schools to use, dependable through busy periods, and far less stressful to operate, so the team can spend their time on customers and food rather than firefighting the website.
